MEDICAL ASSISTANT

Medical Assistants perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician.  Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding for insurance purposes.  Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medication as directed by a physician. Students enrolled in the program will receive clinical and administrative studies related to typical tasks required in the field of healthcare support. The certification examination is offered by the National Health Career Association. ( CCMA).  According to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development statistics, the hourly mean for Medical Assistant positions in Tennessee is $13.00 per hour.

HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

Health Information Management is one of the fastest growing occupations in the healthcare field. Memphis has a world- renowned medical community and the need for health information management professionals is increasing.  According to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development statistics, Health Information Management technicians earn a hourly mean of $16.00 per hour. The Medical Industry is always in search of qualified persons to work in medical billing offices. The National Health Career Association (NHA) offers certification testing for the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS)The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) offers the Certified Coding Associate/Specialist (CCS) Certification.

Different facilities and institutions make use of a CCSs' skills:

  • Hospitals and medical providers take the coded data created by CCSs to insurance companies- or to the government in the case of Medicare and Medicaid recipients-for reimbursement of expenses
  • Researchers and public health officials also use this data to monitor patterns and explore new interventions

Coding accuracy is highly important to healthcare organizations, and has an impact on revenues and describing health outcomes.  In fact, certification has become an implicit industry standard.  Accordingly, the CCS credential demonstrates a practitioner's tested data quality and integrity skills, and mastery of coding proficiency.  Professionals experienced in coding inpatient and outpatient records should consider obtaining this certification (AHIMA).

Eligibility:

By Education: Completion of a training program that includes anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical terminology, reimbursement methodology, intermediate/advanced ICD diagnostic/procedural and CPT coding; OR

By Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of related coding experience directly applying codes

OFFICE ADMINISTRATION

Office Administrative Support personnel are found in every working environment today.  Office administrative support personnel  are responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations such as human resources, payroll, customer service, accounting, and computer technology. The role of an office administrative support person varies from employer to employer, however the importance for qualified individuals to handle the duties of an office administrative support person is universal. Students receive a diploma/certificate of completion in a curriculum of computer technology and accounting. With experience, the diploma holds solid potential for advancement to management positions, especially if it is combined with a Bachelor's degree. HTIM offers certification in Microsoft Office Specialist administered by Certiport & Certified Bookkeeping with The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. According to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development statistics, the hourly mean for Office Administrative Support ranges from $12.00-$23.00 per hour.

PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN

Patient Care Technicians mainly focuses on working closely with patients, in conjunction with nurses. PCTs, sometimes referred to as nursing assistants, help perform basic care for patients, such as assisting them in using the restroom, serving meals or changing bedding. They may also monitor vital signs and provide emotional support to patients and families. Students enrolled in the program will receive clinical studies related to typical tasks required in the field of healthcare support. The certification examination is offered by the National Health Career Association (PCT). According to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development statistics, the hourly mean for Patient Care Technicians/Assistants in Tennessee is $10.83.
